A simple story (1999)

The lyrics of this song tell the story of someone experiencing stress & a sense of alienation from their job (all too common these days!).

Together with other pieces such as ‘Run to the Sun’ and ‘Neapolitan Sixth (part 3)’ it represents the more direct side of my output. I think it’s important to try to establish contact with a wide audience, and songs and short dance inspired pieces are the probably best way of doing this.

The backing track on this extract was created with limited time at someone else’s studio and transferred to cassette tape that same day. The vocals were added later at my studio.

Special thanks to the vocalist on this recording - Chrissy Cashin.

A Simple story

And as the rain clouds gather
And as a strange light fills the sky
You drive into a new town
No sense of where or when or why
You’re working these long hours
You feel the pressure start to show
Yet all the while what matters
Was left behind so long ago

You walk into a café
You need some time to think this through
You’ve often had this feeling
It’s not as if it’s something new
What started out so simply
A steady job for decent pay
Has pushed you in a corner
You’re scared you may have lost your way

You think about your childhood
The dreams you shared with your young friends
Now all the views you hated
Are ones you’re having to defend
It’s such a simple story
It’s one we all should get to know
The only things that matter
Are often those that we let go

Yes all the while what matters
Was left behind so long ago
