The sweetest groove (2001)

This was written in August 2001. It’s a song in a kind of abbreviated sonata form (which is a much simpler idea than it sounds!). The style comes from an experimental piece I wrote back in 1987 based upon an old English madrigal, and this can be heard in the gently pulsating repeated notes, the static vocal line & the pastoral imagery of the lyrics.

This extract blends a concert performance with a studio recording and features the singing of Claire Stallwood and Phil Cashin. Thanks Claire & Phil

The sweetest groove

The sweetest groove
She waits for me
In summer-time
And all of life
Will find me there

In full fields
By cool streams
And dark trees
On high hills

The freshest sound
She sings for me
In summer-time
And all of life
Will find me there

In full fields
By cool streams
And dark trees
On high hills

The leaves red
The clouds fly
In tall grass
Where we lie

She waits for me
She waits
For me
In summer-time

And all of life
Will find me there

The sweetest groove
