Neapolitan Sixth
(1982)
This composition in 3 parts was written for the group Regular Music
and has been performed many times. It anticipates the concept of re-mixing
in that each of the three parts takes a different approach to the material.
This extract is taken from Part 1 (for two keyboards). Rhythm is the main
focus here. The syncopated 4/4 riff is expanded and contracted resulting
in different time signatures, which are then harmonised with each other.
This extract begins in 3/4 and works its way back out to 6/4 (where 2
groups of 6/4 are 'harmonised' with 3 groups of 4/4).
Part 2 grows in intensity over a slow pulse and introduces the main chord
sequence.
Part 3 is a fast light-hearted radio friendly version.
Parts 1 & 3 were recorded on the Regular Music album for Rough Trade
in 1985 and a score is available of part 1.
