Tides & Bells
(2002)
When Dave asked me to play the piano at his wedding in Canberra he was
very specific about what I should play!! Some of Bach's 'Goldberg variations'
while people arrived, Mussorgsky's 'Promenade' from 'Pictures at an Exhibition'
for the entrance of the bride, 3 hymns, and a piece of my own while they
signed the register. Kate had the bright idea of making things easier
for me by using a Cd of Handel's Water Music for their return down the
aisle.
For my contribution I revised an old idea that had never been recorded
or performed. The positive vibe seemed appropriate. It also seemed to
recall aspects of Dave's time in Central & South America (it's written
around a 5-note scale and has a more 'dance-like' middle section that
nods towards Latin rhythms).
The piece is therefore dedicated to David & Kate with best wishes
for their future happiness and thanks that they gave me the chance to
visit Australia.
A score of the piece is now available (see
'Cd' page).
